Cardinal water, ruled by the Moon
Water is the element of feeling and memory, and cardinal water is feeling that takes charge. The tradition reads Cancer as protective and quick to act where the people it cares for are concerned: it starts things too, but what it starts are homes, families, kitchens and circles of people to look after. Scorpio, the fixed water sign, is read as holding feeling deep and long, and Pisces, the mutable one, as dissolving into it; Cancer builds a shell round it. The reading gives it tenderness, tenacity and a long memory, and a habit of retreating sideways rather than saying what is wrong.
Cancer is ruled by the Moon, the only sign the Moon rules, and it is read as the Moon at home: needs, moods, care and the past. The Sun reaches 0° Cancer at the June solstice, on 20 or 21 June by Greenwich time: the longest day north of the equator and the shortest south of it. From there the northern days shorten while the heat builds, and the southern days begin to lengthen through winter. The Sun is at its slowest of the year in Cancer, taking about thirty-one and a half days to cross it, because the Earth is at its farthest from the Sun in early July.
The crab
The crab was sent by Hera to distract Heracles while he fought the Hydra, and was crushed underfoot for its trouble; Hera set it among the stars. The glyph is usually read as two curled claws. The crab is the reading in small: a hard shell, a soft inside, and a sideways way of coming at things.
Cancer and Capricorn across the wheel

The two form the axis of private and public life, of home and career: Cancer tends what is inside the door, Capricorn what the world can see. Common mix-ups
The Tropic of Cancer was named when the June solstice Sun stood in front of the crab. Precession has since carried that point through Gemini and, at the end of the twentieth century, into Taurus, but the tropic kept its name and the sign kept its dates. Births on 20 or 21 June, or on 22 or 23 July, need the time and place to say whether the Sun was in Cancer, which a birth chart does. And for all the shy crab of the horoscope columns, Cancer is a cardinal sign, one of the four the tradition reads as leading.
