Gemini
The twins: a mutable air sign ruled by Mercury, and the last sign of spring. The Sun is in Gemini from about 21 May to 20 June, as the northern days stretch towards the solstice.
Mutable air, ruled by Mercury
Air is the element of words and connections, and mutable air keeps them moving. The tradition reads Gemini as curious, quick and plural, interested in both sides of anything and in the gap between them. Libra, the cardinal air sign, is read as opening conversations with a view to balance, and Aquarius, the fixed one, as holding to an idea; Gemini changes the subject because the next subject is interesting too. The reading gives it wit and range, and the risk of knowing a little about a great deal.
Mercury rules Gemini, as it rules Virgo, and the two are read as its two faces: in Gemini the messenger, talker and trader, in Virgo the analyst. Jupiter, the ruler of Sagittarius across the wheel, is in detriment here, broad belief ill at ease among small facts. Traditionally no planet is exalted or falls in Gemini; some later writers exalt the Moon’s north node here, which is not agreed. The decans go to Jupiter, Mars and the Sun as faces, or to Mercury, Venus and Saturn through the air signs.
Gemini as Sun, Moon and rising sign
The Sun in Gemini
A Sun in Gemini is read as a self built out of conversation and variety: the person reading three books at once, with friends in circles that never meet, who explains a thing best while still finding out about it. The tradition credits it with speed, humour and adaptability, and with a talent for translating between people who would not otherwise understand each other. On the other side it lists restlessness, a short attention span, and a way of talking about a feeling instead of having it.
The Moon in Gemini
A Moon in Gemini is read as needing to put a feeling into words before it can settle: talking, writing or messaging it out is the comfort. Boredom is what it finds hardest, and company and variety steady it. The tradition reads this emotional life as lively and changeable, at times more interested in the story of an upset than the upset itself. The Moon moves on after about two and a half days, so a birth date near a change needs the time.
Gemini rising
Gemini rising is read as an alert, talkative manner, quick movements and a face that seems younger than its years, and it makes Mercury the ruler of the chart. Gemini is the natural sign of the third house, the house of brothers and sisters, neighbours and everyday talk. At the latitude of London it rises in about an hour and three-quarters, close to the average; at similar southern latitudes it is one of the slower signs, taking well over two hours.
When the Sun is in Gemini
The conventional dates are 21 May – 20 June. The Sun arrives at a different hour each year, so the exact moments for this turn of the year are worked out here.
Gemini closes spring in the north and autumn in the south, and its last day is the June solstice, when the Sun reaches its farthest point north. The Sun is slow in Gemini: with the Earth heading for its July aphelion it takes about thirty-one and a third days to cross the sign, one of the longest stays of the year. At high northern latitudes these are the weeks when the sky never grows fully dark.
The twins
The twins are Castor and Pollux, the Dioscuri of Greek myth, one mortal and one a son of Zeus, who chose to share the immortal’s life between them rather than be parted. The glyph is the Roman numeral two. From them the tradition takes the reading of a double nature, and of a sign at its best in company.
Gemini and Sagittarius across the wheel
Opposite Gemini is Sagittarius, mutable too, but fire. The pairing is read as the axis of information and meaning: Gemini gathers facts, local news and the words for things, Sagittarius looks for the belief or principle that ties them together. It runs through the third and ninth houses, the near world and the far one. Planets across it are read as the pull between knowing many particulars and wanting one large answer.
The sign and the constellation
The constellation Gemini is marked by two bright stars, Castor and Pollux, the twins’ heads; Pollux is the brighter, although the Greek letter it was given says otherwise. The Sun is in front of Gemini from about 20 June to 20 July, which is mostly the sign Cancer, and through nearly all of the tropical sign Gemini it is still in front of Taurus. Sidereal Gemini, in Indian astrology, starts about 15 June. The page on signs and constellations shows why the three disagree.
Common mix-ups
Gemini is often called two-faced, but the tradition’s twins are a pair who refused to be separated, and the reading is doubleness, not deceit. Its dates end at the June solstice, so a birth on 20 or 21 June needs the time to tell Gemini from Cancer, as one on 20 or 21 May does to tell it from Taurus; a birth chart settles both. Sharing Mercury with Virgo does not make the two alike, since one is air and the other earth.
What this page claims
This page sets out how Western astrology reads Gemini and where each part of that reading comes from. It describes a vocabulary rather than a person, and it predicts nothing about anybody born with the Sun, the Moon or the ascendant in Gemini.
Questions people ask
What are Gemini’s dates?
Gemini runs from about 21 May to 20 June. By Greenwich time the Sun has entered it on 20 or 21 May in recent years and left at the June solstice, on 20 or 21 June. A birth on either boundary day depends on the hour and the time zone, so the exact birth time and place decide it rather than the calendar date alone.
Do Gemini and Virgo have the same ruling planet?
Yes. Mercury rules both Gemini and Virgo in traditional and modern astrology. The tradition reads them as two sides of one planet: Gemini as Mercury the messenger, curious and talkative, and Virgo as Mercury the analyst, precise and practical. Mercury is also exalted in Virgo, which Gemini does not share, and the elements differ, air for Gemini and earth for Virgo.
What does Gemini rising say about someone?
Astrology reads Gemini rising as a quick, sociable, curious first impression, and it makes Mercury the planet that rules the chart as a whole. The rising sign depends on the minute and place of birth rather than the date, because a new sign crosses the eastern horizon about every two hours on average. It describes a manner and an approach, not anything that happens to a person.
What element is Gemini?
Gemini is an air sign, the mutable one; Libra is cardinal air and Aquarius fixed air. Air is the element the tradition ties to thinking, talking and the links between people. Signs of one element sit 120 degrees apart, a trine the tradition reads as a shared language, while Gemini’s squares to Virgo and Pisces are read as two mutable signs going about change differently.
