What the fourth house holds

The fourth house begins at the imum coeli, Latin for the lowest part of the sky, usually shortened to IC: the point of the zodiac on the meridian beneath the birthplace, opposite the midheaven. Greek authors called it the hypogeion, the place under the earth. In the medieval Latin rhyme the house is genitor, the parent, and the tradition gives it the family a person comes from, the home, land and buildings, ancestry, and the way matters end.

Modern readings stress the private self: where a person goes to be unobserved, the emotional foundations laid in childhood, and whatever they come back to at the end of a day. Which parent the fourth describes has long been argued over. Older authors mostly gave it to the father and the tenth to the mother; many modern astrologers reverse that, and plenty read the fourth simply as the parent who made the home.

Cancer and the Moon

Its natural sign is Cancer, the cardinal water sign, ruled by the Moon. The pairing is read as the reason the fourth is about shelter, memory and belonging, with Cancer read as protective and the Moon as need and habit. The association is modern. Older astrologers read the fourth from its place under the earth, and gave the Moon its joy in the third house rather than here.

An angular house

It is an angular house, and the least visible of the four angles, since it lies at the bottom of the chart below the horizon. The tradition reads its strength as private rather than public: planets here are read as powerful at home and in a person’s inner life even when they show little outside it. With the ascendant, descendant and midheaven it is one of the four pivots that fix the cross of the chart.

Planets in the fourth house

A planet in the fourth is read as part of home life and background in the widest sense. The Moon here is read as a strong attachment to home and a need for a settled base. Saturn in the fourth is read as a sense of duty towards family, or a childhood in which responsibility came early. Uranus here is read as an unconventional home, or one that changed often.

These are ways of describing a background and a need, and none of them says what anybody’s family will do.

An empty fourth house

An empty fourth house is not a sign of an absent family or an unimportant home. The tradition reads the sign at the IC and the planet that rules it. Libra at the bottom of the chart points to Venus, and the house Venus occupies is read as where questions of home and belonging are described.

Where the fourth cusp falls

In Placidus, as in the other quadrant systems, the fourth cusp is the IC exactly, set by the birth time and the longitude and latitude of the place. In whole sign houses it is not: the fourth is the fourth sign from the rising sign, and the IC floats, usually landing in the third, fourth or fifth. The IC turns with the midheaven at roughly a degree every four minutes, so it is only as good as the birth time behind it; if the rising sign is uncertain, the IC is too.

The fourth and the tenth

Straight above it is the tenth house, beginning at the midheaven. The fourth–tenth axis is the meridian of the chart, and it is read as private and public, roots and reputation: where a person comes from set against what they are seen to do in the world. A planet at either end is read with the whole line in view, since the IC and midheaven are always exactly opposite.
