What a personal year is

Numerology runs in cycles of nine. The personal year adds the digits of your birth day and month to the digits of the year the current birthday fell in, and reduces the sum to a single figure; next year it is one more, and after nine it starts again at one. The tradition reads the nine as a turn of a wheel, from a year of starting to a year of finishing, and gives each month and day inside the year a smaller number of its own.

How it is worked out here

The personal year runs from birthday to birthday, as it does on the numbers page, so it changes on your birthday rather than on the first of January. The personal month is the personal year plus the number of the calendar month, reduced; the personal day is the personal month plus the day of the month, reduced. Master numbers are not kept at any step. Other methods exist and give different answers: many count the personal year from January, and some add the digits of the whole date at once. The page states its method and shows every sum, so the working can be checked on paper.

An example

Take a birthday on 14 July. For the year from 14 July 2026 to the next birthday, the sum is the digits of the month, the day and the year of that birthday: 7 + 1 + 4 + 2 + 0 + 2 + 6 = 22, and 2 + 2 = 4, so it is a personal year 4. Twenty-two is often kept whole as a master number, but not here. September inside that year is 4 + 9 = 13, which reduces to 4, and 10 September is 4 + 10 = 14, which reduces to 5. On 14 July 2027 the year moves on to 5.

How the nine years are read

The tradition gives each number a character, and this page uses the same vocabulary as the numbers page. One is read as a year for starting, two for tending what exists, three for finishing something you can show, four for foundations and paperwork, five for saying yes to things and travelling light, six for home, family and what you have taken on, seven for reading and thinking, eight for effort, money and authority, and nine for completing and clearing. These are prompts for looking at a stretch of time, not descriptions of what it holds.

Common confusions

The most common is when the year changes. Many books switch the personal year on 1 January, so between New Year and your birthday they give the next number. With the 14 July birthday above, on 1 March 2027 the January method already gives 5, while this page still gives 4. Neither is a mistake; they are different conventions, and this page names the one it uses. Master numbers are the other: some methods keep 11 and 22 whole, while this page reduces every sum to one figure. The universal year, the digits of the calendar year alone, is a separate figure again: 2026 adds up to 10, which reduces to 1.

What it claims

Nothing here is measured from the sky, and the numbers are arithmetic, not observation. What numerology offers is a fixed rhythm to hold a stretch of time against and a vocabulary for talking about it. That vocabulary is described here as the tradition uses it, and nothing on this page predicts anything.
