Cardinal air, ruled by Venus

Cardinal air is thought set in motion between people. The tradition reads Libra as the sign that begins by relating: it proposes, negotiates, introduces, and weighs one side against the other until the arrangement is fair. Gemini, the mutable air sign, is read as gathering and passing on ideas, and Aquarius, the fixed one, as holding to principles; Libra wants ideas to settle into a balance two people can live with. The reading gives it tact, grace and a strong sense of justice, and the risk of indecision and of keeping the peace at its own expense.

Venus rules Libra, as it rules Taurus, and in Libra it is read on its social and aesthetic side: harmony, courtesy, partnership and proportion. Saturn is exalted here, traditionally at 21°, which the tradition reads as fairness made into law. The Sun is in its fall in Libra, the single self held back by the needs of the pair, and Mars, which rules the opposite sign, is in detriment. The decans belong to the Moon, Saturn and Jupiter as faces, or to Venus, Saturn and Mercury by element.

The Sun in Libra

A Sun in Libra is read as a self that comes into focus beside someone else: a partner, a friend, an opponent across a table. The tradition describes someone considerate, diplomatic and charming, with a keen eye for what is fair and what is beautiful, and a gift for seeing the other person’s case. Its other side is dithering, dependence on approval, and saying yes to avoid the scene a no would cause.

The Moon in Libra

A Moon in Libra is read as needing harmony and company to feel at ease. Conflict unsettles it, and it is read as soothing others quickly, sometimes before its own feelings have been heard. Comfort comes through a shared life, pleasant surroundings, and the sense of being in a fair arrangement. The Moon spends about two and a half days in Libra, so a birth near its entry or exit needs the time.

Libra rising

Libra rising is read as a courteous, easy, attractive manner, the person who puts others at ease and cannot bear an awkward silence, with Venus ruling the chart. Libra is the natural sign of the seventh house, partnership, so when it rises instead the tradition reads the whole chart as leaning towards other people. In the northern hemisphere it is among the slowest signs to rise, nearly three hours at the latitude of London; at Sydney’s latitude it takes about an hour and twenty minutes.

The Sun reaches 0° Libra at the September equinox, on 22 or 23 September by Greenwich time, when day and night are close to equal the world over. After it the nights are longer than the days in the north and shorter in the south, where Libra is the first month of spring. The Sun takes about thirty and a half days to cross Libra, gathering speed as the Earth heads towards its January perihelion.

The scales

The scales are the only symbol of the twelve that is not a living creature. They are often linked with Astraea, the figure of justice in the neighbouring sign, and they suit the equinox, the day the year stands in balance. The stars were already the scales in Babylon, while many Greek writers counted them as the claws of the scorpion; the Roman name, Libra, is the one that stuck.

Libra and Aries across the wheel

Across the wheel is Aries, cardinal fire to Libra’s cardinal air. The tradition reads the axis as other and self: Libra considers the relationship, Aries acts for itself. It runs through the seventh and first houses, the descendant and the ascendant. Planets across it are read as the question of how much of oneself to give to a partnership, answered by weighing both ends rather than choosing one.

The sign and the constellation

The constellation Libra is faint, and its two brightest stars still carry Arabic names meaning the southern claw and the northern claw, from the days they belonged to the scorpion. The Sun is in front of Libra from about 31 October to 22 November, mostly during the sign Scorpio. For all of tropical Libra the Sun stands before Virgo instead. Common mix-ups

Libra is sometimes taken to mean indecisive and nothing more; the tradition’s reading is of a sign that decides by weighing, which takes longer. The equinox arrives at a different hour each year, so births on 22 or 23 September, and on 22 or 23 October when the Sun moves on to Scorpio, need the exact time and place, which a birth chart handles. Libra is air, not earth, although its ruler Venus also rules the earth sign Taurus.
