Mutable earth, ruled by Mercury

Mutable earth is the practical world being sorted, mended and made ready for the next season. The tradition reads Virgo as observant, useful and exacting, the sign that notices what is out of place and cannot leave it there. Taurus, fixed earth, is read as keeping things as they are, and Capricorn, cardinal earth, as building towards a goal; Virgo improves what already exists. The reading gives it skill, modesty and a habit of service, and the risk of worry, and of criticism turned inward as readily as outward.

Mercury rules Virgo and is exalted in it as well, traditionally at 15°, which makes Virgo the one sign where a planet holds both dignities at once. The tradition reads this as Mercury at its most exact: analysis, method, craft. Mercury rules Gemini too, where it is read as the talker. Venus has its fall in Virgo, affection examined too closely, and Jupiter, the ruler of the opposite sign, is in detriment; modern astrologers who give Pisces to Neptune place Neptune in detriment here as well. The decans go to the Sun, Venus and Mercury as faces, or to Mercury, Saturn and Venus by element.

The Sun in Virgo

A Sun in Virgo is read as a self expressed through competence: doing a thing properly, knowing how it works, being the one others ask. The tradition describes someone modest about their own abilities, kind in practical ways, dry in humour, and happiest with a problem that can actually be solved. Its other side, in the same reading, is anxiety, perfectionism, and difficulty accepting that good enough is sometimes good enough.

The Moon in Virgo

A Moon in Virgo is read as needing order to feel calm: a tidy space, a plan, a job to do while feelings settle. Care is shown by doing, a cup of tea made or a problem fixed, more than by saying. The tradition reads it as alert to small shifts in other people’s moods and inclined to worry at its own feelings as if they were faults to correct. Each month the Moon spends about two and a half days in Virgo.

Virgo rising is read as a neat, reserved, attentive manner, the person quietly taking in the room before speaking, and it makes Mercury the ruler of the chart. Virgo is the natural sign of the sixth house, the working day, routine and service. North of the equator Virgo and Libra are the slowest of all signs to rise, nearly three hours each at the latitude of London; at the latitude of Sydney Virgo is among the quickest, at about an hour and twenty minutes.

Virgo is late summer in the north, the season of harvest, which is part of why the maiden holds an ear of wheat, and late winter in the south. The sign ends at the September equinox, when day and night are close to equal everywhere on Earth. The Sun spends a little under thirty-one days in Virgo.

The maiden

The maiden is usually identified with Astraea, goddess of justice and the last of the immortals to leave the earth, or with Demeter or her daughter Persephone, whose story is the story of the harvest. The brightest star of the constellation, Spica, takes its name from the Latin for an ear of grain. The tradition reads her as self-contained and discerning, complete in herself.

Opposite Virgo is Pisces, another mutable sign, of water. The pair is read as the axis of the detail and the whole: Virgo works on what can be fixed, Pisces accepts what cannot. It runs through the sixth and twelfth houses, daily duties and what is withdrawn from the world. The tradition reads planets across it as the pull between order and faith, and between helping by doing and helping by being there.

The sign and the constellation

Virgo is the largest constellation of the zodiac and the second largest in the whole sky, so the Sun spends longer in front of it than any other: from about 16 September to 30 October, covering all of tropical Libra. During the sign Virgo the Sun is mostly in front of the stars of Leo. Sidereal Virgo begins about 17 September, and the gap between the three systems is set out on signs and constellations.

Common mix-ups

Virgo is often called fussy, which the tradition reads as the thin end of caring whether a thing is done well. Its link with virginity comes from the name of the figure, not from anything the tradition says about a person’s life. People born on 22 or 23 August, or on 22 or 23 September, should check the hour, because the Sun changes sign at a different time each year; a birth chart does it. Virgo shares Mercury with an air sign but is earth, and the tradition reads the planet differently in each.
