What the eleventh house holds

Hellenistic astrologers called the eleventh house the Good Spirit, Agathos Daimōn, and gave Jupiter its joy there. The medieval Latin rhyme calls it benefacta, good deeds or benefits, and the tradition placed in it friends, supporters and patrons, hopes and wishes, and the rewards that come with a position. As the second house counted from the tenth, it was also read as the income a career brings.

Modern astrology reads it as friendship and community: clubs, networks and causes, colleagues who share an aim, and the future a person hopes for alongside others. It is read as belonging by choice rather than by birth, which is how it differs from the family of the fourth and the siblings of the third.

Aquarius and Saturn

Its natural sign is Aquarius, the fixed air sign. The traditional ruler is Saturn and the modern one Uranus, and both are read into the house: Saturn as loyalty and long-standing associations, Uranus as the unconventional, the reforming and the collective. Aquarius itself is read as the sign of the group and of ideals held in common, which gives the eleventh its civic tone in modern writing.

A succedent house

It is succedent, following the midheaven. The tradition reads it as what a public role gathers around itself: the contacts, allies and goodwill a position in the world attracts and keeps. It was ranked among the best houses of the chart, standing a sextile from the rising sign by sign count and holding Jupiter’s joy.

Planets in the eleventh house

Planets in the eleventh are read through friendship and shared goals. Jupiter in its joy is read as a wide, generous circle and ease in giving and asking for help. Saturn here is read as a few long, loyal friendships in preference to many light ones. Uranus in the eleventh is read as friends from outside a person’s usual world and a pull towards collective causes. Mars here is read as energy put into teams and groups, with arguments inside them from time to time.

An empty eleventh house

An empty eleventh house does not mean few friends. The tradition reads the sign on its cusp and follows that sign’s ruler. With Aries rising in whole sign houses the eleventh is Aquarius, and Saturn or Uranus is followed to its house to see how the chart describes friends and groups.

Where the eleventh cusp falls

The eleventh cusp lies between the midheaven and the ascendant, and in Placidus it is found by dividing into thirds the time the degrees take to climb from the eastern horizon to the meridian. Close to it, a small change in birth time or a different system can move a planet between the tenth and the eleventh. Whole sign houses give the eleventh one full sign, the sign two before the rising sign, and the rising sign itself has to be right before either version holds.

The eleventh and the fifth

Opposite the eleventh is the fifth house. The fifth–eleventh axis is read as what a person makes and loves for themselves against what they belong to and hope for with others: the personal stage against the shared cause. Both are succedent, and both carried favourable old names, Good Fortune across the chart and the Good Spirit here.
