What the tenth house holds
The tenth house begins at the midheaven, in Latin medium coeli, shortened to MC: the degree of the zodiac culminating on the meridian above the birthplace. Greek authors called it mesouranēma, the middle of the sky. The medieval Latin rhyme names the house regnum, kingdom, and the tradition gives it rule and honour, profession and public action, the authorities a person answers to, and the name they make.
Modern astrology reads the tenth as vocation in the broad sense: the work a person is known for, ambition, their dealings with authority, and the role they play in the eyes of the world. Many traditional authors also gave it the mother, and some modern ones give it whichever parent stood for the outside world. It describes aim and standing; it promises no particular career.
Capricorn and Saturn
Its natural sign is Capricorn, the cardinal earth sign, ruled by Saturn. Saturn is read as structure, time, responsibility and the rules that have to be met, and Capricorn as the sign that climbs steadily; together they give the tenth its reputation as the house of long effort and earned position. In a real chart the sign on the midheaven is read in its place, so Aries at the MC is read as a public life marked by initiative.
An angular house
It is an angular house, and the midheaven is the highest point of the chart. Planets near it were counted among the most prominent a chart can have, and modern readings describe them as qualities that show in a person’s public role before anything more private is known. A planet in the ninth but within a few degrees of the midheaven is often read as belonging to the tenth.
Planets in the tenth house
Planets in the tenth are read as part of how a person is seen and what they aim at. The Sun here is read as a strong wish for recognition and a visible role. Saturn at home in the tenth is read as ambition that builds slowly and takes responsibility seriously. Neptune in the tenth is read as a public image other people project onto, and an attraction to work in the arts, in care or in causes.
They describe a direction, and none of them names a job or a result.
An empty tenth house
An empty tenth house does not mean no career or no ambition. The midheaven is always there, and the tradition reads its sign and the house of its ruler. With Cancer on the MC, for instance, the house the Moon occupies is read as where the chart describes vocation and public standing.
Where the tenth cusp falls
In Placidus, and in every quadrant system, the tenth cusp is the midheaven itself, fixed by the local sidereal time of birth. In whole sign houses the tenth is the tenth sign from the rising sign, and the midheaven can fall a sign either side of it. The MC turns roughly a degree every four minutes, so a birth time an hour out moves the top of the chart by about fifteen degrees and can change its sign, just as it can change the rising sign.
The tenth and the fourth
Directly below is the fourth house, and the pair forms the meridian of the chart. The fourth–tenth axis is read as private and public, roots and reputation: the home a person comes from against the position they make outside it. A planet on the midheaven is read with the IC beneath it in mind, because the two ends are one line.
