What the twelfth house holds
The twelfth house sits immediately above the ascendant, in the part of the sky the rising degree has just come through. The medieval Latin rhyme calls it carcer, prison, and Hellenistic writers called it the Bad Spirit, Kakos Daimōn, giving Saturn its joy there. The tradition placed in it confinement, hidden enemies, sorrow and large animals, and since it makes no classical aspect to the rising sign, old authors read it as out of the self’s sight.
Modern astrology keeps the idea of what is out of sight and reads it without gloom: hospitals, monasteries and prisons as places set apart, but also rest, sleep and dreams, spiritual practice, quiet charity, and the things a person does not show, or does not see in themselves. It is read as the house of what happens behind the scenes, and of time spent away from the crowd.
Pisces and Jupiter
Its natural sign is Pisces, the mutable water sign, with Jupiter as its traditional ruler and Neptune as its modern one. Neptune is read as dissolving boundaries, imagination and longing; Jupiter in Pisces as compassion and faith. Together with Pisces, the last sign of the zodiac, they give the twelfth its tone of endings, empathy and withdrawal before the circle begins again at the ascendant.
A cadent house
It is cadent, the last house before the chart starts over at the ascendant. Old authors counted planets here as hidden and slow to show their effect. Modern readings call the twelfth a house of preparation in the fullest sense: where what is finished is let go and what is coming has not yet appeared over the horizon.
Planets in the twelfth house
Planets in the twelfth are read as working in private, or as parts of a person that others notice before they do. The Moon here is read as a need for solitude to recover, with feelings kept largely to oneself. Venus in the twelfth is read as private affection, or kindness shown quietly and without credit. Saturn in its old joy is read as comfort with seclusion and discipline in solitary work.
A twelfth-house planet within a few degrees of the ascendant is usually read with the first house too, since it rose only minutes before the birth.
An empty twelfth house
An empty twelfth house does not mean nothing is hidden, nor that a person has little inner life. The tradition reads the sign on the cusp, in whole sign houses the sign just before the rising sign, and follows its ruler: Scorpio rising puts Libra on the twelfth, and the house Venus occupies is read as where the chart describes retreat.
Where the twelfth cusp falls
In Placidus the twelfth cusp is the one just above the ascendant, found by dividing into thirds the time from the rising point up to the midheaven. A planet that rose an hour or so before birth is usually in the twelfth, and one about to rise is in the first, so the birth time decides between them. In whole sign houses a planet at an earlier degree of the rising sign than the ascendant counts as first house, where Placidus calls it twelfth. The twelfth and the sixth
Opposite is the sixth house. The sixth–twelfth axis is read as the day’s routine against time withdrawn from it: service in a job against service in retreat or care, what is managed against what is surrendered. Both are cadent houses that come just before an angle, and in the old counting neither could see the ascendant.
