Saturn
Twenty-nine and a half years round the zodiac, and back at its birth position around the age of thirty. The tradition reads it as time, limits and responsibility.
Where Saturn is now
What Saturn stands for
Saturn stands for where a person carries weight and draws limits: duty, time, structure, and what it costs to build something that lasts.
Saturn is the Roman name for Kronos, the Titan whom later antiquity blended with Chronos, time. Astrology gives it cold, age, boundaries, discipline and loss: walls, the elderly, farmers, anything slow that lasts. Modern readings are gentler, treating Saturn as where a person learns to take themselves seriously and builds something through patience. Both agree that it describes effort rather than ease.
How Saturn moves
It goes round the zodiac in twenty-nine and a half years, about two and a half in each sign, and backwards for four and a half months of every year.
It was the outermost planet anybody knew of for all of recorded history until 1781, and for that long it was the edge of the sky.
Saturn is the furthest planet that is easy to see without a telescope, a steady, pale yellow point. A retrograde can stretch a stay in one sign to about three years, and each backward stretch lasts between a hundred and thirty-two and a hundred and forty-two days, so a little over a third of birth charts have Saturn retrograde.
Saturday still carries its name in English. The order of the weekdays comes from the planetary hours, in which each day belongs to the planet of its first hour, and Saturn’s is the day after Venus’s.
Rulership, dignity and sect
Saturn rules Capricorn and Aquarius.
Modern practice shares Aquarius with Uranus. Saturn is exalted in Libra, at twenty-one degrees by the old reckoning, has its fall in Aries, and its detriment in Cancer and Leo, the signs of the Moon and the Sun. The Capricorn page describes the sign most closely tied to it.
It is the greater malefic. The word describes what Saturn signifies in the old system, delay, weight, scarcity and separation, not a judgement of anyone who has it prominent, and the same texts give Saturn endurance, seriousness and sound judgement. It belongs to the day sect, and a day chart is read as warming it, while in a night chart its harder side is thought to show more. Its joy is the twelfth house, of seclusion and hidden things.
Reading Saturn by sign and by house
By sign, Saturn is read as the kind of discipline a person finds natural and the pressure they feel most: in Capricorn it builds by rules, in Leo it worries about being seen to fail. Because it stays over two years in a sign, the sign describes a cohort as much as a person; the house is where the reading turns individual, as the part of life where effort is concentrated and competence is slowly built.
A worked example: Saturn in Libra in the seventh house is exalted in the house of partnership, and is read as someone who takes commitment seriously, is cautious about entering it, and expects a relationship to be fair and made to last. Saturn in Aries in the first house, its fall, is read as self-assertion that does not come easily and is learned by deliberate effort.
What gets confused about Saturn
The Saturn return, when Saturn comes back to its birth position at about twenty-nine or thirty and again near fifty-nine, has become shorthand for a crisis. The tradition reads it as a stocktaking, the point where the structures of the first thirty years are weighed for whether they are really one’s own. The returns page works out the dates for any birth, and the retrograde page shows Saturn’s yearly loop beside the other planets’.
Questions people ask
What is a Saturn return?
A Saturn return is when Saturn comes back to the place it held at birth, which happens at roughly twenty-nine to thirty, again at fifty-eight to fifty-nine, and at about eighty-eight. Because Saturn goes retrograde every year, it often crosses the exact degree three times over several months. Astrology reads the first return as a stocktaking of adult life: commitments, work and what a person has taken responsibility for.
How long does Saturn stay in one sign?
About two and a half years on average, since Saturn takes twenty-nine and a half years to go round the zodiac. Retrograde motion makes the edges untidy: Saturn can enter a sign, back out for a few months and return, and its longest continuous stays reach about three years. People born within the same two or three years usually share a Saturn sign.
Is Saturn a bad planet in astrology?
Traditional astrology calls Saturn the greater malefic because its significations are hard ones: limits, delay, loss, cold and old age. That describes the planet’s nature in the system, not a verdict on a chart. The same tradition gives Saturn patience, endurance and sound judgement, and reads it as easier in a chart born by day, when it is in its own sect.
Which signs does Saturn rule?
Saturn rules Capricorn and Aquarius in the traditional scheme, and modern astrology gives Aquarius to Uranus as well. In a chart Saturn is read as structure and time: responsibility, boundaries, authority, ageing and whatever has to be built slowly. Its house is read as where a person meets their limits and learns to work within them.
