What Uranus stands for
Uranus stands for the part of a person that will not be arranged: independence, disruption, and the sudden change of mind.
Uranus is named for the Greek god of the sky, father of Kronos, which made it the natural name for the planet beyond Saturn. Modern astrologers drew its meanings partly from the decades around its discovery, the American and French revolutions and the start of industrial change: independence, invention, rebellion and the break with how things were done. In a chart it is read as where a person resists being arranged and wants to do things their own way.
How Uranus moves
It goes round the zodiac in eighty-four years, about seven in each sign, and backwards for about five months of every year.
It was found in 1781. Astrology gave it a meaning after it was discovered, which is worth knowing when reading about it.
William Herschel found it from his garden in Bath on 13 March 1781 and at first took it for a comet. It is just bright enough to see without a telescope under a dark sky, and had been charted as a star several times before anybody noticed it move. Its axis is tipped over by about ninety-eight degrees, so it rolls round the Sun on its side.
Around four charts in ten have Uranus retrograde. It crossed from Taurus into Gemini over 2025 and 2026 and stays there until 2032 and 2033, so everyone born in those years shares a Uranus sign. That is why astrologers treat its sign as a generational marker and put the weight on the house it occupies and the aspects it makes.
Rulership, dignity and sect
Uranus has no sign of its own in the traditional scheme, which was settled long before it was found. Modern astrology makes it co-ruler of Aquarius with Saturn.
Traditional astrology, built on the seven wandering lights the ancient world knew, gives Uranus no dignities at all: no exaltation, no fall, no sect, and no place among the benefics or malefics. Modern writers have proposed exaltations for it but do not agree, so none is given here. The Aquarius page reads the sign with both of its rulers.
Astrologers who use Uranus read it above all through its contacts. A conjunction or square to the Sun, the Moon or the rising degree is treated as what makes it personal, and Uranus close to an angle of the chart is read as a marked streak of independence.
Reading Uranus by sign and by house
By house, Uranus is read as the area of life where a person wants freedom most and copes least well with routines imposed from outside: in the second house, an unconventional attitude to possessions; in the fourth, a home life that does not follow the usual pattern. The sign adds the flavour a whole generation shares.
A worked example: Uranus in the tenth house is read as someone who wants a working life on their own terms, is drawn to new or technical fields, and resists a fixed ladder. With Uranus in Aquarius there, its own sign by modern rulership, as for people born around the turn of the millennium, the reading leans further towards group causes and ideas ahead of their time.
What gets confused about Uranus
Uranus is often called the planet of sudden events, and its opposition, when it reaches the point opposite its birth position, is often linked with the midlife crisis. Because Uranus moves unevenly, that comes at about thirty-nine or forty for people born in the 1940s and 1950s and nearer forty-three or forty-four for those born in the 1980s and 1990s. The tradition reads that stretch as a time when the wish to change course is harder to ignore, which is a description of the cycle, not a claim that anything has to happen.
