What the fifth house holds

The medieval Latin rhyme names the fifth house nati, children, and it has kept them ever since, along with the wider idea of whatever a person brings into being. Hellenistic authors called it Good Fortune, Agathē Tychē, and gave Venus its joy there, so the house also collected pleasure, love affairs, feasts and gifts.

The modern tradition places here creative work done for its own sake, hobbies, performance, flirtation and courtship, games and sport, and gambling in the ordinary sense of risk taken for enjoyment. It is read as the part of a life least concerned with being useful, which is exactly what sets it apart from the working sixth house next door.

Leo and the Sun

Its natural sign is Leo, the fixed fire sign, ruled by the Sun. The Sun is read as the self being itself and Leo as warmth and the wish to be seen, and together they give the house its association with self-expression, performance and pride in what one has made. A reserved sign on the fifth cusp, such as Virgo, is read as pleasure taken more quietly, in craft or in getting something exactly right.

A succedent house

It is succedent to the fourth, the angle at the foot of the chart. The tradition reads it as building on the home and roots of that angle: once there is a base, there is room to play and to make things. Succedent planets were ranked below angular ones in prominence, but the fifth was still one of the old favourable houses, standing a trine from the rising sign when houses are counted by sign.

Planets in the fifth house

Planets in the fifth are read in what a person enjoys and how they show affection. Venus, in its old joy, is read as delight in art, romance and good company. Mars in the fifth is read as a competitive streak in games and a bold, direct way of courting. Saturn here is read as somebody who takes pleasure seriously and can find it hard to play without a purpose.

They are readings of temperament. None of them says anything about a particular love affair or about children.

An empty fifth house

An empty fifth house does not mean a life without fun, romance or creativity. The tradition reads it through the sign on the cusp and that sign’s ruler: Sagittarius on the fifth cusp sends the reader to Jupiter, and the house Jupiter sits in is read as where the chart finds its pleasures.

Where the fifth cusp falls

The fifth cusp is intermediate in Placidus, set by dividing into thirds the time between the lowest point of the chart and the descendant, so it shifts with both birth time and latitude. Whole sign houses make the fifth the fifth sign from the rising sign. Around the fifth and sixth cusps the difference between systems is often what moves a planet from play to work, which is why the chart names the system it used, and why the rising sign has to rest on a real birth time.

The fifth and the eleventh

Opposite is the eleventh house. The fifth–eleventh axis is read as personal and collective: what a person makes and loves for themselves against the friends, groups and shared hopes of the eleventh. The two also carried the old favourable names, Good Fortune on this side and the Good Spirit on the other, and both are still read as places of enjoyment and support.
