Jupiter stands for where a person expects more: growth, generosity, belief, and the habit of taking a little too much of a good thing.
Jupiter is named for the king of the Roman gods, and astrology gives it the things a king was meant to provide: law, justice, teaching, religion and philosophy, patronage and plenty. Modern readings stress optimism and the search for meaning. The same generosity runs to overdoing it, and a prominent Jupiter is read as much for excess and overconfidence as for abundance.
How Jupiter moves
It goes round the zodiac in just under twelve years, about a year in each sign, and backwards for around four months of every year.
A year to a sign is where the old idea of returning to the same Jupiter every twelve years comes from.
Jupiter takes eleven years and ten months to circle the Sun. It is the largest planet by far and usually, after Venus, the brightest. The Earth overtakes it every thirteen months, and each retrograde lasts between about a hundred and sixteen and a hundred and twenty-four days, which puts Jupiter retrograde in about three charts in ten.
Every twenty years or so Jupiter catches up with Saturn in what astrologers call a great conjunction. The meeting of December 2020 fell at the first degree of Aquarius and the next, in late 2040, falls in Libra. Medieval astrologers read the element of these meetings as the mark of an era, and after a long run mostly in earth signs both now fall in air. Rulership, dignity and sect
Jupiter rules Sagittarius and Pisces.
Modern astrology gives Pisces to Neptune as well. Jupiter is exalted in Cancer, at fifteen degrees by the old reckoning, has its fall in Capricorn, and its detriment in Gemini and Virgo. It belongs to the day sect with the Sun and Saturn. The Sagittarius page describes the sign most associated with it.
It is called the greater benefic. In the old vocabulary that means the planet of increase, whose significations tend to grow and to be given; the same texts warn that it enlarges whatever it touches, the unhelpful along with the helpful. Its joy is the eleventh house, of friends, allies and hopes, which the Hellenistic astrologers called the house of the good spirit.
Reading Jupiter by sign and by house
By sign, Jupiter is read as what a person believes in and how their generosity shows: in Sagittarius through ideas and travel, in Virgo through usefulness and method. Because it spends a year in a sign, people born within the same year or so share it, so the house carries more of the personal reading, and the house needs a birth chart with a time.
A worked example: Jupiter in Sagittarius in the ninth house is in its own sign in the house of belief, study and long travel, and is read as someone who grows by learning, teaching or going abroad. Jupiter in Capricorn in the second, its fall in the house of resources, is read as someone careful and conservative about what they have, trusting only what has been earned.
What gets confused about Jupiter
Jupiter entering a person’s sign is often sold as a lucky year. The tradition does not say that; a Jupiter transit is read as a time when one part of life takes up more room, which can mean growth or simply more to manage. A Jupiter return, at about twelve, twenty-four, thirty-six and so on, is read the same way: a point to take stock of how that part of life has grown.
