What the eighth house holds
The eighth house carries a blunt old name. The medieval Latin rhyme calls it mors, death, and ancient authors placed here death and its circumstances, legacies, and the goods of those who have died. Counted by whole signs it makes no classical aspect to the rising sign, and Hellenistic writers listed it among the difficult places partly for that reason.
Modern astrology reads it more widely and without dread. As the second house counted from the seventh, it holds the partner’s resources: joint accounts, shared property, loans, taxes, insurance and inheritance. It also holds intimacy and trust, and the inner changes that come when something ends. A busy eighth house is read as familiarity with depth and with other people’s money, not as a sign of loss.
Scorpio and Mars
Its natural sign is Scorpio, the fixed water sign. Its traditional ruler is Mars, and modern charts give it Pluto as well, so the house is often described through both: Mars as what is guarded and fought for, Pluto as what is buried and later brought back up. Scorpio’s own reputation for privacy and intensity is where the eighth gets its all-or-nothing flavour.
A succedent house
It is succedent, following the seventh-house angle, and the tradition reads it as what the partnership of the seventh accumulates: the joint resources and obligations any close tie produces. Like the second house opposite, it is about holding and keeping, but here the holding is shared, and letting go belongs to it as much as keeping does.
Planets in the eighth house
Planets in the eighth are read through shared resources and a person’s response to change. Venus here is read as ease with joint finances and with closeness. Saturn in the eighth is read as caution about debt, dependence, and trusting somebody else with what matters. Pluto in its modern house is read as a strong pull towards whatever is hidden, and an interest in psychology, research or anything with a secret inside it.

An empty eighth house
An empty eighth house does not stand for missing out on inheritance, shared money or intimacy. The tradition looks at the sign on the eighth cusp and its ruler. With Taurus rising, whole sign houses put Sagittarius on the eighth, and the house Jupiter occupies is read as where the chart describes joint resources and change.
Where the eighth cusp falls
The eighth cusp is intermediate, set in Placidus by dividing into thirds the time between the descendant and the midheaven, so latitude and birth time both move it. Further from the equator the Placidus houses around it grow lopsided, and a planet near the cusp may be read in the seventh by one system and the eighth by another. The eighth and the second
Opposite is the second house. The second–eighth axis is read as what a person holds alone and what they hold with others: income against shared money, self-worth against trust, what is kept against what is given up. Both are succedent houses about resources, and the tradition rarely reads one without glancing at the other.
