What the second house holds
The second house follows the first as possessions follow the body. In the medieval Latin rhyme of the houses it is lucrum, gain, and Hellenistic authors gave it to livelihood, the means a life runs on. The tradition places here income, movable property, the things a person buys and keeps, and the practical resources they can draw on without asking anyone else.
Modern astrology widened it to values: what a person thinks worth having, what makes them feel secure, and self-worth in the everyday sense. Counted by whole signs, the second is one of four houses that make no classical aspect to the rising sign, and older writers described it as not seeing the ascendant, a house of things the self depends on without looking at them directly.
Taurus and Venus
Its natural sign is Taurus, the fixed earth sign, ruled by Venus. The pairing is read as the reason the house is about what can be touched and kept, and about pleasure in owning things as well as their use. Venus is read here as liking and valuing, which is how the second comes to describe taste as much as a bank balance. In a real chart any sign can hold the cusp; Gemini there is often read as earning from more than one source, or from words.
A succedent house
It is a succedent house, from the Latin succedere, to follow; the Greek term epanaphora means rising after. A succedent house follows an angle and is read as keeping and building on what that angle began, so the second sustains the person the first describes. Planets here were ranked as moderately prominent: less on show than on an angle, steadier than in the cadent houses.

Planets in the second are read through what a person values and how they handle what they have. Venus here is read as an eye for quality and comfort, and a liking for beautiful things. Saturn in the second is read as caution with resources and a habit of building security slowly, sometimes from a feeling that there is never quite enough. Mars here is read as working hard for what one owns and being quick to defend it.

An empty second house
An empty second house does not mean a lack of money or of self-worth. At least two houses are empty in every chart, and income is not read from planets alone. The tradition looks at the sign on the second cusp and at its ruler: with Aries on the cusp, for example, the second is read through whichever house Mars occupies.
Where the second cusp falls
In Placidus the second cusp is an intermediate cusp, found by dividing into thirds the time the degrees take between the ascendant and the lowest point of the chart. Intermediate cusps are where house systems disagree most, and at higher latitudes a Placidus second house can stretch across more than a whole sign, or hold an intercepted sign that has no cusp of its own. A quarter of an hour of error in the birth time can move this cusp by several degrees, so it depends on the birth time as much as the rising sign does.
The second and the eighth
Across from it is the eighth house. The second–eighth axis is read as mine and ours: what a person earns and owns alone against what is shared with, owed to or inherited from other people. A busy second house facing an empty eighth is read as a leaning towards keeping resources separate, and the reverse as a life in which joint arrangements take the larger part.
