Does Mercury retrograde really bring exes back?

Maybe his name lit up your screen this week, and the first thing you did was look up where Mercury was. Or maybe nothing has arrived, and you have caught yourself counting the days in which it still could. Either way there is a flutter of hope that is a little embarrassing to admit, and a quiet suspicion that the sky is being asked to do a job it never applied for.

What Mercury is actually doing

Three times a year, occasionally four, Mercury appears to stop against the background stars, drift backwards for about three weeks, and then move forwards again. The planet does not reverse. Mercury runs on the inside track, closer to the Sun and faster than we are, and each time it overtakes the Earth the angle we see it from changes, so that for a while it seems to slide back.

The retrograde page has the dates, computed, for Mercury and every other planet.

The arithmetic: about one day in five

Three stretches of about three weeks come to nine or ten weeks. A year has fifty-two. So Mercury is retrograde for roughly a fifth of every year. Pick a day with your eyes shut, and there is about a one in five chance it is a retrograde day.

Now think of the things that happen to a person fairly often. A phone dies. A train is late. An email goes to the wrong colleague. Someone you used to love sends a message. If one of those happens to you five times in a year, then on average one of the five will fall inside a retrograde, with nothing causing anything.

The rest is which ones get told. The text that arrives during a retrograde comes with a ready-made story, so it gets screenshotted and sent to the group chat. The four that arrive outside one have no story and are forgotten. No one takes a screenshot because Mercury was moving forwards. A thing that happens one time in five, and is the only one anybody mentions, starts to feel like a rule.

Where the idea comes from

The tradition is older than the meme. Mercury has long stood for messages, speech and errands, and astrologers have read its retrograde as a time for going back over things: reviewing, rereading, picking up a conversation that was left unfinished, instead of starting something new. “Exes come back” is the modern, social-media form of that idea.

It is a belief, a shared joke and a frame. It is not a cause, and it is not a forecast. There is no measured effect of Mercury on phones, contracts or who writes to whom. This site gives the dates of each retrograde and says nothing about what they bring, and that is on purpose.

Where astrology fits

As a frame, “a time for going back over things” can still be useful, provided you take it as a question to yourself and not as news about him. What is unfinished for you? What did you never get to say? Those are good questions in any month.

A chart works the same way: it describes you. Your own Mercury is read as how you put things into words, which matters if you answer him. Your Moon is read as what steadies you, which matters more if you are the one waiting. A chart cannot see his phone or his mind, and no position of any planet can tell you what he is going to do.

If he did write

The calendar did not send that message. He did, for reasons of his own, and you do not know them yet. He may miss you. He may have been lonely on a Sunday evening. He may have seen the same posts you have and used them as cover: “apparently it’s retrograde, so here I am” is a joke that lets someone write without owning the decision to.

If you are the one waiting

This is said gently. If no message has come and you are watching the dates, the sky has handed you a reason to keep waiting. Before, you were hoping with nothing to point to. Now the hope has a deadline and something that sounds like authority behind it. That is what the belief is doing for you: it makes waiting feel reasonable for three more weeks.

There is no shame in that. But the hope is yours, and it was there before Mercury turned. The same goes if you are tempted to write first. “It’s retrograde” is not a reason, and it is not an excuse either.

Look at your own chart while you are here

The chart below will not say whether he is going to write. It shows your own Mercury and Moon: how you put things into words, and what you lean on while you wait.

Nothing you type is sent anywhere. The chart is worked out in your browser and kept on this device.

Read his message as if it had come in any other month

Take the retrograde out of it. Imagine the same words arriving in an ordinary week, with nobody online talking about planets. Then look for three things.

  • What he actually said. “Hey, been thinking about you” says that he thought of you. It is not an apology or a plan.
  • What he is asking for. A reply, a meeting, forgiveness, or nothing at all. If you cannot tell, he has left the deciding to you.
  • Whether anything is different. Whatever ended it had a shape. Does the message go anywhere near it, or does it step round it as if the two of you had simply lost touch?

If his message frightens you more than it moves you, because he used to control or threaten you, this page is not the right help. A person is: someone you trust, who can hear all of it.

Decide what you would want from a conversation

Do this before you answer, and take as long as you need. No window closes when Mercury turns forwards again. Finish this sentence on paper: “If we talked, I would want…” An explanation. An apology. To find out whether it could be different this time. To be on friendly terms and no more. Or nothing, which is also a complete answer.

Once you know, you can ask for the thing plainly and not hope he will offer it.

If no message comes

Look up the day the retrograde ends and give it an ordinary plan: work, the shopping, the friend you owe a call. The next morning, notice what is still there. If the hope has not gone anywhere, then it never depended on Mercury, and you can stop asking the sky about it.

What is left is the real question, and it belongs to you: what you are waiting for, and how much longer you want to give it. The same posts will come round with the next retrograde. You can laugh at them without setting your calendar by them.

If this has been going round your head for weeks, saying it aloud to a person does more than another evening of scrolling. An astrologer who works one to one can look at your chart with you. A good one will not tell you that a retrograde is sending anyone anywhere. They will ask what you were hoping his message would mean.

Questions people ask

How often is Mercury retrograde?

Three times a year, occasionally four, for about three weeks each time. That comes to roughly a fifth of the year. The exact dates are on the retrograde page.

My ex texted during Mercury retrograde. Does that mean something?

It means he decided to write. With Mercury retrograde about one day in five, a good share of all messages land inside one by chance. What it means is in what he said and what he does next, not in the date.

Is he going to write to me during the next retrograde?

Nobody can tell you that, in either direction. A retrograde is an effect of viewing angle and has no measured influence on what people do. Anyone who says he will write, or that he will not, is guessing.

Is it a bad idea to get back in touch with an ex while Mercury is retrograde?

It is no worse and no better than any other week. Whether to get in touch depends on what you want and on what has changed since it ended.
